Simply put, cow comfort is to minimize stress in the environment in order to maximize production capacity. It robs the cow of stress from producing potential milk and health that we have gained through breeding and better nutrition programs. A cow must eat, drink, lie down, and make milk or be milked.
Cow comfort is also largely a managerial decision and mindset that requires sacrifice to achieve. It is not enough to say that we will design the facilities taking into account the comfort of the cow. While good management can improve poor design, even good design can not compensate for poor management.
